Time zones exist because of the rotation of the earth. We expect the sun to be at its highest point in the sky at noon. Because the earth rotates this happens at a different time for each longitude. Before time was standardized, each major city and region had its own time, related to the position of the sun. Trains made this system obsolete. To standardize time, it seemed logical to divide the world in 24 areas, one for each hour of the day.
